The Resilient Ageing Project

The Resilient Ageing Project

The Resilient Ageing Project was born from a desire to “do better” where it comes to exercise for older adults. To “do better” in terms of how we engage with exercise to promote resilience and maintain physical and cognitive function well into older age. The hallmark of human resilience is our capacity to not only withstand stressors and challenges but to adapt to, recover from, and grow in response to those challenges. This adaptive resilience is an innate characteristic of all living bodies. Despite natural age-related changes, our bodies never lose this capacity.

We are able to use this innate adaptive ability to significantly alter the trajectory of age-related declines in both our physical and cognitive function.

Our individual capacity for adaptive resilience is influenced by a range of both innate and environmental factors, and by the interaction between these factors. One of the most singularly influential of these factors is exercise. Exercise plays a pivotal role in cultivating our capacity for adaptive resilience, and in maintaining that capacity as we get older.

Small Group Classes: The small group exercise programme is the cornerstone of The Resilient Ageing Project. These classes are designed specifically to meet the needs of older adults and focus on developing coordinative strength (functional strength and coordination), dynamic balance and mobility. The sessions are enriched with a variety of novel game-based tasks and cognitive challenges that stimulate both body and mind. The result is a unique, engaging style of exercise that promotes adaptive resilience and lifelong vitality. Due to the small-group structure (4-6 participants) there is ample scope for personalisation and to address any existing injuries or illness.

Intake starts with a comprehensive 90min assessment which includes:

  • Identifying goals, personal health history and specific requirements.

  • Functional strength and balance assessment using a computerised force platform system.

  • Core function assessment.

  • Cognitive function screen.

Classes run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Please refer to the class timetable for details. Due to the popularity of the classes, advanced booking is advised, however there is no need to sign up to an ongoing membership. One-on-one sessions are always available for those who are not ready to join a group, require more intensive personalised assistance, or simply prefer individual sessions.

Workshop & Seminar Series: The small group classes are complimented by a workshop/seminar programme which covers a range of topics around the theme of resilient ageing, including brain health, menopause, breathing, foot health etc. To be notified of upcoming sessions, please sign up to the email newsletter here, or follow on Instagram. Upcoming workshops and seminars are also listed on the Events page. These sessions are open to anyone and are held in-person at The EP Group studio in South Yarra. If you would like to organise a workshop or seminar at your workplace/gym/studio, please get in touch.

Professional Development Programme: The Resilient Ageing Project’s continuing education courses are especially for allied health and fitness professionals who work with older adults in an exercise setting. Find out more here.
