Marcelle Malan

Marcelle Malan - Accredited Exercise Physiologist

Marcelle has honed her unique approach over more than two decades of experience in the field of exercise physiology. Initially drawn to strength and conditioning in high-performance sport, she spent some years developing her skills in this area. As her work progressed, she became increasingly interested in the application of exercise physiology and motor control research to the development of physical and mental resilience in mid-life and beyond. Her style of practice creatively combines elements from a wide range of influences to deliver an enriching and playful experience for her clients - challenging traditional notions of what rehabilitation and exercise “should” look like - particularly for older adults.

Her areas of expertise converge around the theme of Resilient Ageing and include:

  • Rehabilitation of complex and/or chronic injury and illness.

  • Coordinative strength training (functional strength, balance, coordination).

  • Exercise strategy for perimenopause through to post-menopause.

  • Brain health, including cognitive function and mental health.

  • Maintenance of metabolic health into older age.

She also has a special interest in:

  • Female physiology and promoting a better understanding of the female body in and through exercise science and medicine.

  • Stress physiology and the impact of exercise on stress regulation and resilience.

Marcelle works in private practice as part of The EP Group in Melbourne, Australia, where she heads The Resilient Ageing Project. She works one-on-one with individuals and conducts small group movement skills and mobility classes. She also conducts regular workshops, seminars, and professional development courses on a range of subjects related to her key areas of practice. More information about upcoming events can be found here.

“A few things, it seems, have always been with me: a big love for biology and engaging with the natural world, an inquiring mind, more than a bit of irreverence, and a preference for old wisdom over young technologies. These disparate tendencies all converge to shape how I approach my practice. My life’s work is to understand and work with the natural physiology of the body to build resilience, aid rehabilitation and sustain lifelong wellbeing. When I’m not at work I’m probably having a double espesso somewhere, throwing heavy things around the gym, frowning over a book, or off exploring a new trail via means of hiking boot or mountain bike.”

Pathmaker, there is no path. The path is made by walking.
